THE DANGER OF GUILT

Guilt is one of the major killers of confidence in a Christian life. Many times we keep things within only to realize, it’s the genesis of our insecurities. Sherlock Holmes,” once pulled a prank on 12 prominent Englishmen. He sent them an anonymous note that said, “All is found out. Flee at once.” Within 24 hours, eight of those men had left the country! Only four asked “why should I flee and what has been found out! They had confidence in them that never allowed them to panic but let me ask, why did those eight run away? It’s because guilt destroys your confidence and makes you a slave to unseen forces. You cannot walk freely on the road because you are afraid you will meet certain people. You start walking like a gangster on the road wondering if the police have seen him because of his un-noticed criminal record. You walk with the readiness to dash to the bush, for sight of any police, because you know it might be found out. Guilt kills people’s morale. It dwindles your spirit within and makes you a slave. As the bible says, “The wicked flee when no man is pa-suing them but as the righteous are bold as a lion. [Proverbs 28:1]

When talking to the church of his time, James gave them the remedy to living a guilty free life. He said “confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. [James 5:16]  In Psalms 32, David said” When I kept silent, my bones wasted away, through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me, my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you- and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. In verse three, he says, “There was a time when I wouldn’t admit what a sinner I was. But my dishonesty made me miserable and filled my days with frustration” (Psalm 32:3). He later says in psalms 34:4-5, “i sought the Lord, and he answered me, he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, their faces are never covered with shame.

Saint of God, are you guilty about? What might you be hiding your guilt of that makes you walk with fear? Is anything worthy confessing? Don’t give the devil room, confess your fault and move on as Christ leads your way. You may not be perfect 100% but you can walk talk if you are true to your God when you confess your faults and sins. Our confidence in Christ is built on confession. May God help you and me. God bless you
